What exactly is a pipe nipple?

A pipe nipple is a short length of pipe, threaded on one or both ends, used to join two fittings — couplings, valves, tees — into a threaded piping system. It looks simple, and it is, which is exactly why the details matter: the wrong thread standard, the wrong length, or the wrong schedule is one of the most common reasons a shipment gets rejected at receiving.

We cut to Schedule 40, 80, XH and XXH — schedule refers to wall thickness, not length. A higher schedule means thicker pipe wall and a higher pressure rating, not a longer nipple.

    TBE

    Threaded Both Ends

Threaded on both sides — our default configuration for a standard nipple.

    Close nipple

    No barrel

Threaded along its entire length, no unthreaded shoulder — for the tightest connections.

    TOE

    Threaded One End

One end threaded, one left plain — usually for a weld-to-thread transition.

    Barrel

     Center section

The unthreaded middle of a standard nipple — a longer barrel means a longer overall nipple.

    types of pipe nipples

Every nipple we ship gets checked against three numbers before it leaves the shop floor: overall length, thread length, and OD. Confirm those three in your inquiry and everything else follows.

Four materials, each for a different job

Same cutting and threading process across all four — the difference is how each one holds up once it’s installed. Here’s what each is actually good for.

For anything that gets rained on. Hot-dip zinc coating holds up outdoors where black steel would start rusting fast.

    ASTM A153 coating

The one most buyers order without thinking twice — indoor, dry, general-purpose runs. Our highest-volume material.

    ASTM A106 / A53 / A733 · NPT, BSPT, BSPP · 1/8″–12″

Soft enough to thread cleanly by hand, tough enough for plumbing and low-pressure gas lines.

    ASTM B43

304/316 grade — for food processing, marine decks, or anywhere corrosion simply isn’t allowed to happen.

    ASTM A312

    • Thread standards

    NPT, BSPT or BSPP?

All three get made in-house — tell us which your mating fitting uses.

    NPT

American standard, 60° angle, tapered — seals through thread interference. The default across North America.

    BSPT

British standard, 55° angle, tapered — same sealing principle as NPT, but not interchangeable with it.

    BSPP

British standard, 55° angle, straight — seals with a washer or O-ring instead of the thread itself.

Every material above comes in the same configurations — standard pipe nipple, close nipple, and TOE nipple, plus long nipples on request. Pick your material first, then choose the length and thread from there.

    Common questions

Black steel vs. galvanized — which for an outdoor run?

Galvanized. Black steel’s mill finish will corrode noticeably faster once it’s outside or wet; the zinc coating on galvanized is built for that exposure.

Yes, as long as the thread standard matches — just watch for galvanic corrosion if the joint stays wet for long periods.

Check the mating fitting’s spec, or send us a thread gauge reading or part number and we’ll match it exactly.

500 pieces on standard sizes. Smaller sample runs and custom lengths are available — ask when you send your spec.

Still not sure which material fits?

Send us the application — we’ll tell you exactly what to order.
