“Do you want FOB or CIF pricing?”
Do not choose casually before you understand the cost difference.
A wise decision can reduce thousands of dollars from your landed cost per shipment and vice versa.
In this guide, we will talk about how to choose the most suitable shipping terms to reduce your shipping costs.
What FOB and CIF Actually Mean
FOB — Free On Board
Under FOB terms, our responsibility as the supplier ends once your goods are loaded onto the vessel at the origin port.
We typically ship from Tianjin, Qingdao, or Shanghai, depending on your order and schedule.
What we cover:
- Factory to port trucking
- Export customs clearance
- Origin port handling charges

What you cover:
- Ocean freight
- Marine insurance
- Import customs clearance
- Destination port handling & drayage
- Inland delivery to your warehouse
Example — 1 x 20ft container of carbon steel pipe nipples (approx. 8,000 pcs):
| Cost Item | Estimated Amount |
|---|---|
| FOB price | $6,200 |
| Ocean freight (China → LA/Houston) | $1,800 – $2,400 |
| Marine insurance (0.3% of cargo value) | ~$20 |
| U.S. customs + ISF filing | ~$250 |
| Port handling & drayage | $350 – $600 |
| Estimated landed cost | $8,620 – $9,470 |
CIF — Cost, Insurance & Freight
Under CIF terms, we quote you a price that already includes ocean freight and insurance to your destination port.
Your costs begin once the container arrives.
What we cover:
- Everything in FOB, plus:
- Ocean freight to a named U.S. port
- Minimum marine insurance (ICC-C, typically 110% of cargo value)
What you cover:
- Import customs clearance
- Destination port handling & drayage
- Inland delivery
Same container under CIF:
| Cost Item | Estimated Amount |
|---|---|
| CIF price | $8,100 – $8,600 |
| U.S. customs + ISF filing | ~$250 |
| Port handling & drayage | $350 – $600 |
| Estimated landed cost | $8,700 – $9,450 |
FOB vs. CIF: Which Is Cheaper for U.S. Buyers?
From our experience working with U.S. importers, FOB gives experienced U.S. importers lower total costs. Here’s why:
1. You control the freight rate.
When we quote CIF, we usually work with our partner forwarders, and the rate may include a margin.
As an exporter, we will use our own forwarder at a marked-up rate.
2. You control insurance coverage.
The minimum CIF insurance (ICC-C) covers very limited risks.
U.S. buyers importing high-value fittings usually need broader coverage anyway.
In most cases, arranging your own insurance is both more flexible and more cost-effective.
3. Easier to dispute damage claims.
Under FOB, you control the entire shipping chain from loading onward.
If a container arrives damaged,
you can work directly with your carrier and insurer, without going through us as an intermediary.
When CIF makes sense:
- You’re a first-time importer and don’t yet have a freight forwarder relationship
- Your order volume is too small to negotiate competitive freight rates independently
- You want a single, simple number to compare multiple suppliers quickly
-
We can offer competitive freight due to our shipping volume
Other Terms You’ll Encounter
EXW (Ex Works) — You take full responsibility from our factory.
This includes:
- Trucking
- Export clearance
While EXW offers the lowest quoted price, it also comes with the highest operational complexity.
We usually do not recommend EXW unless you have a reliable agent in China.
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) — The supplier handles everything door-to-door, including U.S. import duties.
This is the simplest option for buyers.
However:
- You lose visibility into the actual cost breakdown
- DDP pricing typically includes additional margin to cover risk and uncertainty
Duties on pipe fittings (HTS codes 7307.xx) typically range from 5–25% depending on material and country of origin.
